Uh Oh! Scratched Sunglasses?

23 November 2013
Scratched SunglassesSunglass culture is a complex and widespread one. In the U.S. alone, nearly 96 million pairs of sunglasses were sold in 2012. For years, sunglasses have been serving the dual purposes of eye protection and fashion forwardness, beginning with famed emperor Nero - who liked watching gladiators fight through polished gems in order to enjoy the color and image distortion. Many new developments have been made since then, especially when polarized lenses were introduced for World War II, and Ray-Bans hit the shelves in 1953, selling 10 million units since 1998.

Anyone who is immersed in sunglass culture, or who has ever purchased a pair of designer shades, knows the pain of having to fix scratched sunglass lenses. Before you throw them away in a fit of temper and confine yourself to the darkness of your basement in morning, try these tips. There are ways to fix scratched sunglass lenses, and even ways of replacing scratched sunglass lenses, if you're really in a bind.

Method One: Brass or Silver Polish

Pick up a bottle of brass or silver polish and dab a little on your lenses with a cotton ball. Gently rub it around, and then remove excess polish with a clean, lint-free cloth. Repeat until the scratch is gone.

Method Two: Toothpaste

Use non-abrasive, non-minty, non-gel, non-whitening toothpaste, and apply the paste with a cotton ball, rubbing into the scratch in a circular motion for about 10 seconds. Rinse off the paste with cool water, and then remove excess with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Method Three: Baking Soda

Mix one part water and two parts baking soda in a small bowl, until it's a thick paste. Rub the paste into the scratch for 10 seconds in a circular motion, using a cotton ball. Rinse it off with cool water and remove any excess with a lint-free cloth.

Method Four: Vehicle Wax

Use a soft cloth to apply wax to your lenses in circular motions. Wipe excess away with another cloth and repeat as necessary.

Method Five: Lemon Pledge

This fix might only last for a few days. Spray your lenses lightly with Lemon Pledge, and rub the spray around in a circular motion with a lint-free cloth until the scratch and the Pledge are gone. Repeat as necessary.
