Sunglass repair & adjustment

Need to adjust the frame, tighten a hinge or straighten an arm? This guide covers the small changes you can make at home.

Adjustments

Both metal and plastic frames can be adjusted. Decide what you want to change before you start.

If the sunglasses feel too loose, tighten the hinges first. If that is not enough, bend the arms or the nose area slightly inward. Either change brings the ends of the arms closer together, so the frame sits more firmly.

Trace the frames on a piece of paper first, so you have a record of the starting shape. Make each change small. Moving the arms in by about 1 cm is as far as we would go in a single adjustment.

After each change, put the frames back on the tracing and check the fit before going further.

Hinge Adjustment

Over time, sunglass hinges wear and the screws work loose. A loose hinge usually means a looser fit, so the sunglasses are more likely to slip or fall off.

The hinges should be tight enough that a gentle shake does not move the arms, and loose enough that opening and closing them does not bend or strain the frame.

Check whether the screws are Phillips or flat-head and use the matching screwdriver. Hold the sunglasses firmly and tighten the screw in very small increments, checking the hinge after each adjustment. Stop once the arms stay in place but still open and close smoothly.

Plastic Frame Adjustments

Plastic frames can be adjusted, but take your time.

Important: soak the frames in very hot tap water for about 30 seconds before adjusting them. Heat makes the plastic more flexible. Do not use boiling water.

Trace the frames on a piece of paper so you know the starting shape. Moving the arms in by about 1 cm is as far as we would go in a single adjustment. After each change, place the frames back on the tracing.

If you need to bend the arms, bend them about twice as far as you need to, hold for 10 seconds, then release. Check them against the tracing and repeat until the fit is right.

Metal Frame Adjustments

In most cases, metal frames can be adjusted by hand. As before, trace the frame first and make small adjustments until the fit is right.

For firmer frames, needle-nose pliers can help. Cover the jaws with a cloth before using them, as bare metal tools can easily scratch the frame.
