The historic Kentucky Derby was created in 1875, and much of the credit must go to Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. who spearheaded the development of the race was instrumental in finding the funding to build what would become Churchill Downs. Since 1875, the Kentucky Derby has grown into a true global phenomenon.
