On Friday 16 October, we did something we don't get to do very often. We opened the doors of our lab in Billinudgel and invited locals to bring in their scratched sunglasses for new lenses at 25% off. For 20 years, our replacement lenses have mostly travelled by post to people all over the world. This time, the sunnies came to us in person.
It was our way of celebrating International Repair Day, and it turned out to be one of our favourite days of the year.
What is International Repair Day?
International Repair Day happens every year on the third Saturday of October. It was developed by The Restart Project, a London charity, together with its partners in the Open Repair Alliance. 2026 was the tenth edition, and this year's theme was how repair brings us together.
Community repair events ran around the world between 10 and 25 October. Repair cafes, fixers and small businesses all took part, and you can see them on the Repair Day map. We held our event on Friday 16 October.

Why repair matters to us
Most sunglasses don't get thrown out because the frames are broken. They get thrown out because the lenses are scratched. The frame is still perfectly good, and often it's a pair someone loves, but the scratches make them hard to wear.
That's the whole reason The Sunglass Fix exists. Sunglass lens replacement lets you keep wearing the frames you already own, for a fraction of the price of a new pair. We make replacement lenses for more than 14,000 sunglass models, from Ray-Ban and Oakley to Prada and Gucci, and we can custom cut lenses when a model isn't listed. Every pair we fix is one less pair in landfill.
So when we heard about a day dedicated to fixing things instead of throwing them out, it was an easy yes.
Our Repair Day open day: how it went
From 9am to 4pm, locals from around Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers dropped into our warehouse and lab. Everyone got 25% off all replacement lenses for the day.
Here's how it worked:
- You handed us your sunglasses.
- We checked your model in our database.
- You picked your new lenses with us: polarised, non-polarised or Diamond-Bio polarised, in whatever tint or mirror colour you were after.
- You grabbed a coffee or a tea and a muffin while our lens technician cut and shaped your new lenses.
- You walked out wearing your sunglasses with brand new lenses.
For models that needed a custom cut, people left their sunglasses with us. We fit the new lenses within 10 business days and post them back, or the owners pick them up from the lab.
The best part was meeting the people behind the orders. We ship all over the world, but plenty of people in our own community didn't know you could replace scratched sunglass lenses at all. Now quite a few more of them do.

How sunglass lens replacement works if you missed the day
You don't need to wait for next year's Repair Day to fix your sunnies. Our replacement lenses are made to order and delivered to your door:

Giving back: 1% for the Planet and The Restart Project
The Sunglass Fix is a proud member of 1% for the Planet, which means we give 1% of our sales to environmental non-profits. To mark Repair Day, we're directing our donation to The Restart Project, the charity behind International Repair Day.
The Restart Project helps people use their electronics for longer and cut down on waste. It runs free community Restart Parties, where volunteer fixers help people repair broken devices. It also campaigns for the right to repair: it runs the UK Repair & Reuse Declaration and co-founded Right to Repair Europe. And it collects data from community repair events to show what breaks and why.
They fix laptops and toasters, we fix sunglasses, but it's the same idea. Repairing what you already own is one of the simplest ways to waste less.

Frequently asked questions
Can you replace the lenses in any sunglasses?
We make replacement lenses for more than 14,000 sunglass models, and we can custom cut lenses for most frames that aren't listed. Search for your model on our website to get started.
Are replacement lenses as good as the originals?
Our lenses are made from high-grade optical Polyamide, with an anti-scratch coating and 100% UV protection. You can also choose polarised or Diamond-Bio polarised lenses, which can be an upgrade on what your sunglasses came with.
Is it worth replacing sunglass lenses instead of buying new sunglasses?
If your frame is in good condition, replacing the lenses is usually much cheaper than a new pair, and it keeps a perfectly good frame out of landfill. Our replacement lenses start at $39.95.
Thank you
A big thank you to everyone who came into the lab on 16 October, and to The Restart Project for starting International Repair Day. If you've got a scratched pair sitting in a drawer, find your sunglass model and give them a second life.
