What kind of frame do your sunglasses have?
Sunglass repair generally depends on the frame type. Most sunglass designs and frame materials make it a cinch to change parts and replace lenses. Is the lens surface scratched? Don’t lose hope! Check out our guide on how to remove scratches from sunglasses.
Unsure how to pop the lenses back into your glasses? As a rule, putting new lenses in is easier than taking them out. So, try removing them from the frame. Frame Adjustments
Hinge Adjustments
Hinge adjustments improve the wear and fit of sunglass frames. Hinges shouldn’t be too tight or too loose. A gentle shake shouldn’t move the arms nor should it be difficult to fold or unfold the frames.
To tighten your sunglasses, determine if the screws are Standard or Phillips head. The right Sunglass Repair screwdriver pays for itself many times over! Adjust the screws until the arms stop moving when shacked and the arms fold smoothly. A dab of clear nail polish on the exposed screw surfaces will make the adjustment last longer.
Plastic and Metal Frame Adjustments
Metal and plastic frames are the most widely used in sunglasses. If your sunglasses are too loose, gently making slight adjustments can significantly change them for a firmer fit. Before you do anything else, trace your frames on paper as a reference template of the starting shape.
First, try tightening the screws at the hinges. If more substantial measures are in order, bend the frames. Apply force at the bridge of the nose or along the arms to bring the ends closer together.
After each change, compare the glasses to your traced template to see how far the arms have moved. Aim for incremental changes of about 1 cm.
Plastic Frame Adjustments
Soak your plastic frames in water at 60 Degrees Celsius for 30 seconds. Bend the arms about twice as far as the desired change and hold for 10-20 seconds. Compare them to your template. Let them cool and try the new fit.
Metal Frame Adjustments
Metal frames are often bendable enough to adjust by hand. For frames made from tougher alloys, use pliers. To prevent scratching, grip the metal wrapped in a soft cloth. Compare each change to your template.
Replacing Nose Pads
Identifying Your Nose Pad Type

Screw In Nose Pads
Unscrew the retaining screws enough to release the nose pads. The screws are tiny and easily lost! Don’t take them out completely. Push the stem of the new pads through the receiver. Line up the hole and retighten the screw.
Push In Nose Pads
Stems can break if you apply too much pressure. With that in mind, grasp the nose pad firmly and pull while holding the nose pad stem straight. Alternatively, push the pad through the receiver with a toothpick or optical screwdriver.
Rubber Moulded Nose Pads
Rubber moulded nose pads are similar to push-in pads. Carefully pull off the old pad and push on the new one. The greatest challenge with this type is finding pads that have the right shape to fit the receiver.
